Queen's Park Savannah

Day One:

A gentle morning hike through the rainforest on the Centre grounds is laid on for you, followed by lunch. In the afternoon it’s off to the Caroni Bird Sanctuary to experience one of nature most amazing phenomenons, the daily return to roost, of the Scarlet Ibis, the National Bird of Trinidad. These dazzling birds return by their thousands to roost on mangrove islands within the Swamp, really a must see experience, you will leave with “dilated-pupils” other worthy species include the amazing camouflage of the Common Pottoo a bird that mimics a stump of a tree!

Also of note are the very cute Silky Anteaters a nocturnal species that feed on that huge Termite nests strewn throughout the swamp, the Cooks Tree Boa can also be seen as well an impressive variety of bird species such as rare Red-capped Cardinal, a good feather in your cap should we spot it!! Then it’s back to base.
Cost Per Person US$75.00

Day Two:

We head off on an amazing adventure to experience the thrill and unique splendor of Nariva Swamp an Internationally protected wetland, with outstanding wildlife diversity.
We take a short boat ride through one of the narrow estuaries to “Bush Bush Island” a dead “Mud Volcano” now a lush swamp forest, in search of the endemic Weeping Capuchin Monkey and the often vociferous Red Howler Monkey, two highly endangered species. Encounters are often breathtakingly close and photo opportunities amazing even with what I jokingly call “Mickey-Mouse” (Point-and-Shoot) cameras.

This amazing island is also home to the much sought after Blue Emperor Butterfly and the Mot Bleu or Owl Eye Butterfly, two striking, huge Butterflies.
As birds go, you are likely to see some of the top-end species of this environment and T&T, such as the Red-bellied Macaws, and the recently reintroduced Blue and Gold Macaws, Red-breasted Blackbirds, Black-bellied Tree Ducks, Golden-headed Manakins and Savannah Hawks.

But the diversity does not stop with Birds and Butterflies, the flora is also quite outstanding, from Bird-of-Paradise Heliconias to the Rose-like aroma of the Cannonball Tree flower, or the Giant 300 plus year old Silk Cotton Trees. Also of note are the vast number of Fungi species of all shapes, sizes and colours, and other mammals such as Agouti, Tree- Porcupines, and the Trinidad Red-tailed Squirrel.

Day Three:

We take a long adventure along Trinidad and Tobago’s most picturesque road the Blanchissuesse Road, to Brasso Seco a sleepy North coast village, this tour is abundant with T&T’s top of the line Flora & Fauna, such as The Three species of Trogons, Toucans, Manakins, Jacamars, Hummingbirds, Honeycreepers.
Flora, Black Stick, Mountain Heliconia, Water Grass, Jacob’s Coat, Immortelle, Chaconia. Butterflies; Emperor, Postman, Anartia, Cracker, Sweet Oil, Tiger, Flambeaux etc.

This road was cut right the way through Trinidad’s Northern Range and has many interesting nooks and crannies along the way.
Cost Per Person US$75.00

Day Four:

After breakfast we load up and say farewell to the Asa Wright Nature Centre as we head to the north east to see the Giant Leatherback Turtles that come up from the sea to lay their eggs in the sand of protected beaches,(March-August). Truly a life experience, unique in every way. Also of great note are the Trinidad Piping Guan “Pawi” Trinidad and Tobago’s only endemic species of Bird, a must see, as these bird are critically endangered. There are said to be 70-200 left in the wild, the population that are at large in this area are holding their own from Poachers due in part to tourism. Many of the Islands top avian species are abundant in the lush rainforests of this coastal paradise, birding is extremely productive.
Cost Per Person US$100.00

Day Five:

This morning we take an early hike up the mountain, a gentle assent to have a last look at some more native forest dwelling birds picking up some of the birds that may have eluded us over the first few days plus other amazing fauna and flora. Then it’s back to base for lunch and shortly there after we pack up and say goodbye to the sleepy village of Grand Riviere and head off to Piarco International Airport for Tobago.
