Avifauna Tours

Tobago Tour - Four Nights

Staying at one of three fine all inclusive local hotels in Speyside north of the island.

The north of the island is a case study in progress where the crystal clear warm waters reveal a myriad variety of aquatic life forms rivaling any international marine ecosystems in diversity and quality of life.

Of particular note is the rich unspoiled rainforests of the north which sports the oldest rainforest reserve in the world. The avifauna is extremely exotic, with rare resident breeding species and significant nesting colonies of seabirds, not to mention the giant Leatherback Turtles that also come to shore to lay their eggs in the long sandy beaches.

Day one:

This day we will visit Little Tobago Island just three miles off the Tobago mainland, here we will see the Red-billed Tropicbirds, Boobies, Nody's, Sooty Terns, Oropendolas, Frigates and many other forest dwelling species. The view is great near the top of the island and the vegetation quite prehistoric looking. Then we take a short boat ride to Goat Island were we can explore the amazing undersea world of Tobago’s rich marine life. Put on your snorkels and flippers and plunge into the safe warm waters and immerse yourself into the kaleidoscope of colours, shape, and unique forms, come face to face with exotic fish such as, Queen and French Angle FIsh, Spotlight Parrotfish, Peacock Flounder, Sqirrelfish, Trumpetfish, Grouper, Moray Eel, Butterflyfish, Blue Tang, Porkfish, Hogfish and so many more. It’s like living a documentary….really!
Then we return to mainland have lunch and spend the rest of the day at the beach near or at the hotel depending where we stay.
Cost Per Person US$115.00

Day two:

This day we take a gentle assent into the main ridge rainforest reserve, and take in some beautiful vistas, birds and plant life as we head to Gilpin Trace. This trail was the original north coast road traversed long ago by plantation workers and their donkey carts as they brought produce to and from the Cocoa and citrus estates. Today Gilpin Trace is perhaps one of the most productive and important breeding grounds for the extremely rare White-tailed Sabrewing Hummingbird a species thought to have become extinct due to a sever hurricane in 1963 which devastated the species so much so that it was not seen for over a decade. Since 1974 it has been making a very slow comeback but numbers are increasing; truly a must see life species.
After Lunch on the road we head back to base and relax at the beach, kayak, snorkel, swim etc.
Cost Per Person US$95.00

Day three:

It’s off to Hillsborough Dam stopping at various points of interest along the way, taking in coastal and inland species of fauna and flora. At Hillsborough most of the islands top forest dwelling species can be found. The dam itself is rather high above sea level, and attracts quite a number of aquatic species of fauna, birds such as Osprey, Anhinga, Kingfishers, Caiman (a small breed of Crocodile), Iguana, Tegu (terrestrial iguana), and many species of noteworthy birds such as the Blue-backed Manakin, the only species of Manakin found on Tobago, Green Kingfisher, Collared Trogon, Water Tyrants, Caribbean Martins, Copper-rumped and Ruby Topaz Hummingbirds etc. then after lunch is back to base for more of what you can’t get enough of, Sand, Sun, and Sea!!
Cost Per Person US$95.00

Day four:

It’s south to the other end of the island, where we will take in the sites of the southern end of the island take in one of the world class beaches such as ‘Nylon Pool’ as well as visiting some historical sites of note and visiting one or two of my favourite haunts for prime migratory and resident species of birds. We shall pop in to the Arnos Vale estate and get face to face with Hummingbirds with the most dazzling colours and agility; often you can feel the wind from their wings as they dart past you chasing each other around the feeders. Great world class photo opportunities are afforded here as a multitude of exotic noteworthy species visit the feeders for tasty morsels of fruit and bread; species that are difficult to photograph in the wild, are tame at the feeders and opportunities are ever present for much of the day, a really great place to visit. Then its back to base to relax and prepare for our departure to the Airport.
Cost Per Person US$95.00
