The type of wheelchair you choose depends on your preferences, what is covered under your insurance, and of course what kind of disability you have.

Often handicapped seat lifts, wheelchairs and other items are covered under insurance policies. It really depends on what kind of insurance you have. If you are uninsured there are programs like Medicaid and Medicare, as well as Social Security Disability, to help you pay for your medical equipment. You should be able to get everything you need for safety and mobility without paying much out of pocket.
